Alder
Last updated: [DATE]
You can use the free chapters without giving us anything at all. No name, no email, no account. Nothing about you leaves your phone.
If you set up a family account, we store your child's first name, their age, a PIN, and a record of what they studied. We have never asked anyone for an email address and there is nowhere in this app to type one. We show no adverts, we use no tracking or analytics, and we do not sell anything about you or your child to anyone.
The detail is below.
Alder is operated by [FULL LEGAL NAME], trading as Alder, of [BUSINESS ADDRESS], Ireland.
For data protection law, we are the data controller for the information described here.
You can contact us about anything in this policy at [CONTACT EMAIL].
A parent or guardian sets up the account. Children do not sign themselves up.
In Ireland, the digital age of consent is 16. A child under 16 cannot give valid consent to their own data being processed, so this app is built so that they never have to. A parent creates the family account, chooses a password, and adds each child. Only then does a child get a PIN to sign in with.
If you are under 16, please ask a parent or guardian to set this up for you.
The first chapter of each course is open to anyone, with no sign-in. If that is all you use, we collect nothing about you. Your score is saved in your own browser's storage on your own device and is never sent to us.
We store:
| What | Why |
|---|---|
A family code (e.g. ABCD-2345) | So your family's records can be found again |
| Your chosen password, stored only as a scrambled hash | To let you back in |
| A six digit parent PIN, stored only as a scrambled hash | So you are not typing a long password in front of your child |
| A one-time recovery key, stored only as a hash | Because there is no email address here, so there can be no reset link |
|---|
We never store your password or either PIN in a readable form.
| What | Why |
|---|---|
| First name or nickname — a full name is not needed | So the app can greet them and so you can tell the records apart |
| Age | To show the right school year and to pitch the teaching correctly |
| Whether to say "she", "he" or "they" | So the app does not guess wrongly |
| A four digit PIN, stored only as a scrambled hash | So they sign in as themselves |
| A random ID (ten characters) | This, not their name, is what their study record is filed under |
|---|
While a signed-in child is using the app, we record:
Day records are automatically deleted after 90 days. This is why the app tells you that "all time" honestly means the last 90 days rather than pretending to reach back further.
A parent can send a written note, and optionally one photo, to their own child inside the app. These are stored so the child can read them.
This app sets no cookies. It contains no analytics, no tracking pixels and no advertising of any kind. There is no Google Analytics, no Meta pixel, and no third-party tracker of any sort. We have never counted visitors.
The app does store things in your browser's own storage on your device — your scores, your recent study log, and your sign-in token. That stays on your device and you can clear it at any time through your browser settings.
We use a small number of companies to run the app. They act as our processors and may only use the information to provide their service to us.
Cloudflare — hosts the website and stores the family records described above.
Anthropic — powers the AI Teacher. When your child asks it a question, we send that question, the question they were working on, their first name, their age, the pronouns you chose, and a short summary of their recent progress so the teacher can pitch its answer correctly. If your child attaches a photo of their written working, that photo is sent so the teacher can look at it. We do not store attached photos or files — they are read in the browser, sent with the question, and not kept by us.
ElevenLabs — powers read-aloud. When the speaker button is tapped, the text to be spoken is sent so that audio can be generated.
[PAYMENT PROVIDER] — will process payments if and when paid subscriptions begin. Card details are handled by them and are never seen or stored by us.
Some of these companies process information outside the European Economic Area. Where that happens, the transfer is covered by the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses or an equivalent safeguard.
We do not sell, rent or share your information with anyone else. We would only disclose it if we were legally required to.
When your phone contacts our server, it sends an IP address, as every internet connection does. We use it for one thing only: counting requests so that no single connection can run up an unlimited bill on the AI Teacher or the voice.
These counts are held in the server's temporary memory and are never written to storage. They are cleared whenever the server restarts. We do not keep logs of IP addresses and we cannot look up who visited when.
| What | How long |
|---|---|
| Daily study records | 90 days, then deleted automatically |
| Saved written summaries | The most recent 24 per child |
| A child's name, age and PIN | Until a parent removes that child, or asks us to close the account |
| A child's sign-in token | 30 days |
| A parent's sign-in token | 7 days |
| IP request counts | In memory only; gone on restart |

Under the GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018 you have the right to:
Much of this you can do yourself, immediately, inside the app: a parent can edit a child's details, change a PIN, or remove a child entirely from the parent dashboard. Removing a child removes their record.
For anything else, contact us at [CONTACT EMAIL]. We will respond within one month.
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your information, you can complain to the Data Protection Commission, 6 Pembroke Row, Dublin 2, D02 X963 — dataprotection.ie.
No system is perfectly secure, but we have deliberately kept the amount of information we hold as small as we can, which is the strongest protection there is.
If we change this policy we will update the date at the top and, where the change is significant, tell you inside the app.
